Is grandparental childcare socio-economically patterned? Evidence from the English longitudinal study of ageing
This study is based on grandparents aged 50+ who looked after grandchildren. Data are from wave 8 of the nationally representative English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (2016/2017). We exploit newly collected information on frequency of grandchild care, activities, and reasons for care. Using multinomial regressions, we first examined the extent to which grandparents ’ socio-economic characteristics (wealth and education) are associated with frequency of grandchild care. Second, using logistic regressions, we investigated whether wealth and education are associated with activities and reasons for grandchild care. Overall,...

Older adults ’ mentioned practices for coping with loneliness
In conclusion, while older adults differ in coping efforts they mention, these differences are only explained to a small extent by their experience of loneliness and available resources. For future research and practice development, a deeper understanding of the process of coping with loneliness is needed. (Source: European Journal of Ageing)

Daily fluctuations in subjective age and depressive symptoms: the roles of attitudes to ageing and chronological age
AbstractStudies indicate that both subjective age —individuals’ perception of their own age as older or younger than their chronological age, and attitudes to ageing are related to physical and mental health. Less is known about the possible dual effect of these two constructs of subjective views of ageing. In the current study, 334 participant s (aged 30–90,M = 58.15) reported their daily subjective age and mental health along 14 consecutive days. Attitudes to ageing were measured at baseline. Results indicated that daily variation in subjective age was related to daily variation in depressive symptoms, such tha...

A systematic review of systematic reviews of needs of family caregivers of older adults with dementia
AbstractFamily caregivers provide vital assistance to older adults living with dementia. An accurate assessment of the needs of caregivers supports the development and provision of appropriate solutions to address these needs. This review of systematic reviews analyzes and synthesizes the needs identified by family caregivers. We conducted a systematic review of systematic reviews using the AMSTAR guideline. Electronic databases were searched for systematic reviews on the needs of caregivers in the context of dementia using a combination of keywords and medical subject headings. Records resulting from the search were scree...

A research framework for the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021 –2030)
AbstractThe mission of UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2020 –2030) is to improve the lives of older people, their families and their communities. In this paper, we create a conceptual framework and research agenda for researchers to knowledge to address the Decade action items. The framework builds on the main components of healthy ageing: Environments (hi ghlighting society and community) across life courses (of work and family) toward wellbeing (of individuals, family members and communities). Knowledge gaps are identified within each area as priority research actions. Within societal environments, interrogating beliefs a...

Digital transformation of everyday lives of older Swiss adults: use of and attitudes toward current and future digital services
AbstractDigital (consumer) services, such as ticket machines, self-checkout, and online reservations, have become increasingly important in modern society. Studies on adoption of these services and openness to using future public digital services (e.g., online voting, online taxes, electronic patient records) have mostly focused on younger adults or nonrepresentative samples among older adults. Therefore, two important questions remain that can best be addressed with representative sampling: To what extent do older adults use or are willing to use current and future digital services in their everyday lives? How do older ad...

Emotional information processing in young and older adults: meta-analysis reveals faces elicit distinct biases
AbstractAlthough a number of empirical studies have found support for distinct emotional information processing biases in young versus older adults, it remains unclear whether these biases are driven by differential processing of positive or negative emotional information (or both) and whether they are moderated by stimulus type, in particular face versus non-face, the former of which is known to be subject to distinct processing. To address these gaps in the literature, our analyses included 2237 younger (mean age  = 21.61 years) and 2136 older (mean age = 70.58 years) adults from 73 data sets, 19 involving face...

Does personality shape the personal social networks of older Europeans?
AbstractThe aim of the study was to clarify whether personality traits predict the structure, function and quality of egocentric confidant networks in later life. Data were drawn from Waves 7 and 8 of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) (N = 39,172). We regressed network size, contact frequency and network satisfaction on the Big-5 personality traits, using a single path analysis structure, controlling for country, sociodemographic background and health status. The findings showed that the personality traits were related to the social network outcomes, but their effect was modest and less pred...
