Associated features of pediatric loss-of-control eating severity during a laboratory-based feeding paradigm
Eat Behav. 2023 Jul 27;50:101790. doi: 10.1016/j.eatbeh.2023.101790. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLaboratory-based loss-of-control eating (LOC-eating; i.e., feeling like one cannot stop eating) paradigms have provided inconsistent evidence that the features of pediatric LOC-eating are consistent with those of DSM-5-TR binge-eating episodes. Thus, this study investigated whether recent LOC-eating (in the prior month) and/or greater LOC-eating severity during a meal are positively associated with faster eating rate, energy intake when adjusting for hunger, post-meal stomachache and sickness (a proxy for eating until uncomfo...

Evaluation of a combined, online intervention for binge-type eating disorders and high body weight in young adults
This study tested an online guided self-help intervention that provided cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) tools for EDs and behavioral weight loss (BWL) content to young adults with binge-type EDs and high body weight.METHOD: 60 adults aged 18-39 with clinical/subclinical binge-type EDs and high body weight were randomized to a combined condition or a CBT-only condition. Participants received self-help content for 8 weeks and self-reported ED attitudes, frequency of binge eating and compensatory behaviors, and weight at baseline, 4-weeks, and 8-weeks. Linear mixed models and negative binomial models compared changes betwe...

Body satisfaction and disordered eating among male collegiate athletes: From point-prevalence to prediction
In this study, we surveyed 1975 male collegiate athletes in April/May 2020 to assess their body satisfaction and ED/DE symptomatology to determine prevalence and prediction between the two. First, we determined athletes' ED classification: 18.5 % (clinical) and 4.7 % (subclinical). Second, although 60 % to 70 % of the athletes reported satisfaction across five body dimensions, they were significantly more satisfied with their body muscularity and least with their leanness and thinness. Third, through hierarchical regression, athletes' body satisfaction significantly explained their ED/DE symptomatology, explaining 34 % of ...

Ecological momentary assessment of state affect prior to and following loss of control eating in young men
DISCUSSION: Study findings contradict extant theory and empirical data largely from female samples. Negative affect did not increase risk for LOC eating, nor did LOC eating function to improve participants' mood; rather, positive mood slightly decreased after LOC eating. Further investigation around the observed decline in positive affect after LOC eating will clarify if this is a relevant intervention point in this population.PMID:37517107 | DOI:10.1016/j.eatbeh.2023.101782 (Source: Eating Behaviors)

Longitudinal associations of binge eating with internalized weight stigma and eating self-efficacy
CONCLUSION: This study provides novel evidence of longitudinal associations between binge eating, IWS, and eating self-efficacy. IWS warrants further consideration as a treatment target and outcome in studies of BWL and BED.PMID:37515998 | DOI:10.1016/j.eatbeh.2023.101785 (Source: Eating Behaviors)

Testing replicability of the relationship between weight suppression and binge eating in three non-clinical samples varying in lifetime weight history
CONCLUSIONS: Findings highlight the importance of investigating the generalizability of eating disorder risk and maintenance theories across the weight spectrum. Weight loss may not increase risk for binge eating among those with a history of higher weight. Future work should replicate and extend this finding using longitudinal designs. More research is needed to elucidate which weight loss motivations and/or behaviors are most closely linked to binge eating.PMID:37515999 | DOI:10.1016/j.eatbeh.2023.101784 (Source: Eating Behaviors)
