Generating Evidence of Critical Care Nurses' Perceptions, Knowledge, Beliefs, and Use of Music Therapy, Aromatherapy, and Guided Imagery
This study sought to determine critical care nurses' perspectives of music therapy, aromatherapy, and guided imagery (GI) including perceptions of legitimacy, self-reported knowledge, interest in gaining knowledge, beliefs of harm/benefits, professional use, personal use, recommendations for use in critical care practice, and requests for these therapies by critical care patients or families. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional design with repeated measures was conducted with critical care nurses (N = 53) practicing in 3 intensive care units at a Midwestern academic-affiliated medical center. The nurses' current perce...

Prone Position in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Patients: A Retrospective Analysis of Complications
Conclusions The onset rate of complications given by the use of prone position in ARDS patients is similar to data reported by previous literature. The implementation of a dedicated protocol in specialized centers and the involvement of 5 trained and skilled professionals while moving the patient in the prone position are recommended to prevent the occurrence of similar adverse events. An Initiative Using Simulation to Aid in Retention of Advanced Cardiac Life Support Knowledge and Skills in an Emergency Department Nurse Residency Program
The objective of this quality improvement project was to explore the retention of knowledge and skills of 20 graduate nurses who participated in a nurse residency program using an ACLS simulation-based learning experience (SBLE) at 2 and 8 weeks post completion of an ACLS provider course. Methods A pretest-posttest design was used with 2 emergency department graduate nurse cohorts who participated in an SBLE focused on ACLS components at 2 and 8 weeks after attending the ACLS provider course. Simulation-based learning experiences were videotaped, and outcome measures (ie, time to shock) were measured in seconds. The nur...

Senior Nursing Students' Perceptions of Their Readiness for Oral Medication Administration Prior to Final Year Internship: A Quantitative Descriptive Pilot Study
Conclusion This pilot study revealed that students did not feel adequately prepared for their role in oral medication administration. Key contributors to this were pharmacology knowledge acquisition and application, along with lack of opportunities in practice to undertake oral medication administration roles and responsibilities. A streamlined approach to address these challenges involving nurse educators, clinical preceptors, and, most importantly students, is paramount. Despite the small scale of this single-site study, it did provide useful insight into students' perceptions of their readiness for oral medication adm...

Bridging the Communication Gap: A Quality Improvement Project of a Ventricular Assist Device Program
Conclusion Implementation of the LVAD Emergency Line has improved communication between patients in the outpatient setting. This increased patient safety by allowing patients to speak to LVAD-trained first responders and VAD coordinator personnel immediately without ever being put on hold. This communication process can be applied to other clinical programs. (Source: Dimensions of Critical Care Nursing)
