Effects of gamma frequency binaural beats on attention and anxiety
Curr Psychol. 2023 May 4:1-8. doi: 10.1007/s12144-023-04681-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBinaural beats (BB) are an auditory phenomenon produced from a combination of two sine waves with slightly different frequencies presented to each ear. Previous research has implicated the role of BBs through brainwave entrainment in potentially giving rise to benefits ranging from enhanced memory and attention to reduced anxiety and stress. Here, we investigated the effect of gamma (40-Hz) BBs on attention using the attention network test (ANT), a previously unused task that assesses three subtypes of attention: Alerting, Orientin...

Online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic: How university students' perceptions, engagement, and performance are related to their personal characteristics
Curr Psychol. 2023 Mar 20:1-20. doi: 10.1007/s12144-023-04403-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUniversity students faced unexpected challenges in online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. Findings from early phases of the Covid-19 pandemic and before show that online learning experiences may vary from student to student and depend on several personal characteristics. However, the relative importance of different students' personal characteristics for their online learning experiences at later phases of the Covid-19 pandemic is still unclear. This cross-sectional, correlational study investigates how personal characteri...

COVID-19 related stress and fears of contamination: the impact of feared self-perceptions
Curr Psychol. 2023 Apr 12:1-12. doi: 10.1007/s12144-023-04553-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSpecific concerns have been raised for those suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly those suffering from contamination fear. Investigation in non-clinical and OCD samples have reported an increase in contamination symptoms in association with the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, stress related to COVID-19 has been found to be a major predictor of an increase in contamination symptoms. It has also been suggested that these effects may be accounted for by feare...

Transitioning to college with ADHD: a qualitative examination of parental support and the renegotiation of the parent-child relationship
Conclusion: Optimal levels of involvement and support from parents in the context of a strong PCR is beneficial for adjustment to college for those with ADHD. We discuss the clinical implications of our findings, such as therapists helping families transition to college, and working with college students with ADHD on an adaptive renegotiation of the PCR in their transition to adulthood.PMID:37359679 | PMC:PMC10041513 | DOI:10.1007/s12144-023-04525-0 (Source: Current Psychology)

Do executive functions buffer against COVID-19 stress?: A latent variable approach
Curr Psychol. 2023 May 6:1-17. doi: 10.1007/s12144-023-04652-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLevels of COVID-19 stress have soared worldwide as a result of the pandemic. Given the pernicious psychological and physiological effects of stress, there is an urgent need for us to protect populations against the pandemic's psychological impact. While there exists literature documenting the prevalence of COVID-19 stress among various populations, insufficient research has investigated psychological factors that might mitigate this worrying trend. To address this gap in the literature, the current study seeks to examine executive...

Exposure to COVID-19 and aggression: the mediating role of anxiety and the moderating role of rumination
This study looked into the effect of exposure to COVID-19 on aggression and how anxiety may act as a mediating factor, as well as lastly how rumination could moderate a variety of indirect paths during the epidemic of COVID-19. According to the current study's findings, which included a sizable sample of Chinese college students (N = 1,518), being exposed to COVID-19 showed a positive connection with aggression and anxiety, as well as rumination. These findings clarify the role that mediators play in the relationship between anxiety and exposure to COVID-19. The results are also helpful for personalizing treatments and put...

Toward an understanding of occupational burnout among employees with autism - the Job Demands-Resources theory perspective
This article aims to gain insight into the phenomenon of occupational burnout among employees with autism based on the theoretical framework of the Job Demands-Resources theory and the literature on employees with autism in the workplace. Firstly, we argue that although the resources and demands of the neurotypical and neurodivergent employees might be different, the theoretical mechanism of occupational burnout formation remains similar among the neurotypical and neurodivergent employees, leading to the similar burnout experience. Next, we distinguish key demands that might drain neurodiverse employees' energy, and spark ...

Childhood Environmental Unpredictability and Experimentally Primed Uncertainty in Relation to Intuitive versus Deliberate Visual Search
Curr Psychol. 2023 Apr 28:1-14. doi: 10.1007/s12144-023-04667-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVisual search is an integral part of animal life. Two search strategies, intuitive vs. deliberate search, are adopted by almost all animals including humans to adapt to different extent of environmental uncertainty. In two eye-tracking experiments involving simple visual search (Study 1) and complex information search (Study 2), we used the evolutionary life history (LH) approach to investigate the interaction between childhood environmental unpredictability and primed concurrent uncertainty in enabling these two search strategie...
