Complications in facial Mohs defect reconstruction
Purpose of review: To review the recent literature in regards to complications after reconstruction of Mohs defects, outline common pitfalls and to discuss the literature on avoiding complications as outlined per aesthetic subunit. Recent findings: Complications in facial Mohs reconstruction commonly consist of infection, wound necrosis and dehiscence, hematoma and suboptimal scarring. However, site-specific complications such as hairline or eyebrow distortion, eyelid retraction or ectropion, nasal contour abnormality, alar retraction, nasal valve compromise, significant facial asymmetry or even oral incompetence must als...

Parotid lymph nodes in primary malignant salivary neoplasms
Purpose of review To review the literature on parotid lymph nodes and their involvement in primary malignant epithelial salivary gland neoplasms (PMESGN). The parotid gland has two identifiable lymphatic systems – extraglandular and intraglandular both topographically separate but functioning as a single unit. Recent findings The publications available have concentrated on intraparotid lymph nodal metastatic (IPLN) disease only. Summary The data reported was retrospective and observational. The limitations encountered was the variability of extent of the parotid surgery, unclear evaluation of IPLN limit...

COVID-19 related olfactory dysfunction
This article reviews the literature on COVID-19 related anosmia, focusing on the epidemiology, pathophysiology recovery rates, current available treatment options, and research regarding novel treatments. Recent findings Loss of sense of smell is one of the most prevalent symptoms reported by patients after COVID-19 infection. Even though there is a high self-reported recovery rate, recent studies have demonstrated that up to 7% of the patients remain anosmic more than 12 months after onset, leaving millions worldwide with severe olfactory dysfunction. Olfactory training remains the first line recommended treatmen...

State of the art regeneration of the tympanic membrane
Purpose of review One of the most common diseases of the tympanic membrane is a perforation, and tympanoplasty is one of the more common procedures in otolaryngology. Tympanic membrane regeneration and bioengineering aim to improve the success rate of the procedure, increase the availability of different scaffolds and provide innovative tools that will simplify the surgical technique and make it accessible for surgeons with varying expertise level. This review aims to raise awareness of current tissue engineering developments in tympanic membrane regeneration and how they may augment current clinical practices. We focus ...

Enhanced recovery after head and neck cancer surgery: a review of current literature
Purpose of review Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is well documented in a number of surgical specialities. However, it remains an emerging concept in surgical head and neck cancer care. The purpose of this review is to appraise the current evidence investigating enhanced recovery in head and neck cancer, and explore areas for future clinical research. Recent findings There were three key themes in enhanced recovery from the current head and neck cancer literature: early oral feeding, fistula closure and service delivery. This evidence is emerging and the quality of papers remains variable which makes it difficu...

Management of benign vocal fold lesions: current perspectives on the role for voice therapy
Purpose of review Benign vocal fold lesions (BVFLs) cause dysphonia by preventing full vocal fold closure, interrupting vibratory characteristics and increasing compensatory muscle tension. Management includes phonosurgery, voice therapy, pharmacological treatment or more commonly a combination of these interventions. This review aims to present current perspectives on the management of BVFLs, particularly exploring the role of voice therapy. Recent findings The review highlights variation in the management of BVFLs. There is evidence that phonosurgery is a well tolerated and effective intervention for BVFLs. Primary ...

Current indications for balloon sinuplasty
Purpose of review The purpose of the review is to evaluate the current indications and contraindications for balloon sinuplasty and review the clinical trials performed in this area. Recent findings The indications for balloon sinus dilatation are somewhat similar to those for endoscopic sinus surgery. Balloon sinus ostial dilation (BSD) has been found to be most effective in the treatment of recurrent acute sinusitis (RARS) and chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyposis (CRSsNP) that has been refractory to medical therapy. Multiple randomized clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of BSD in improving qual...

Pearls for the middle fossa approach in acoustic neuroma surgery
Purpose of review To discuss the use of the middle fossa craniotomy for resection of vestibular schwannomas; to present pearls of and modifications to the approach. Recent findings The middle fossa craniotomy allows for hearing preservation in the resection of intracanalicular vestibular schwannomas. Over recent years, the approach has been modified to address larger tumors with a limited cerebellopontine angle component. Positive identification of the superior semicircular canal allows for rapid exposure of the internal auditory canal (IAC). Removal of cerebrospinal fluid from the posterior fossa during exposure of t...
