Surgical Interventions for COPD
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) treatment is aimed at managing the disease rather than cure, with a focus on improving quality of life and decreasing exacerbations. Interventional therapies, including lung volume reduction surgery, bullectomy, lung transplantation, and bronchoscopic lung volume reduction treatment using endobronchial valves, are treatment options for patients with COPD who are symptomatic due to hyperinflation despite optimal medical management. We will review the current literature to provide a comprehensive summary of the currently available scientific data, discuss typical treatment-related...

Smoking Addiction and Strategies for Cessation
Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) worldwide. Smoking cessation is thus integral to the treatment of COPD. Nicotine addiction is a disease dependent on the complex interactions of neurotransmitter pathways, conditioned behaviors, environmental cues, genetic predisposition, and personal life circumstances, which render some more susceptible to tobacco abuse than others. The most successful smoking cessation programs are individualized, comprehensive, and utilize combinations of clinician counseling, behavioral reinforcement, community resources, advanced technology support...

Nonpharmacological Therapies in COPD
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has recently been gaining more attention, as beyond impacting roughly 10% of the world's population, it also carries high morbidity and mortality. The mainstay of management is optimizing pharmacological therapy, but various nonpharmacological therapies have shown benefits in providing symptom improvement and relief, prevention and mitigation of exacerbations, quality of life, and even mortality rate. Such modalities include supplemental oxygen therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, viral and bacterial vaccinations, and noninvasive positive pressure ventilation therapy. (Source: Critical C...

Determining Nursing Education Needs During a Rapidly Changing COVID-19 Environment
This study aims at developing and implementing education on infection prevention and management of patients with suspected or known COVID-19 for the nursing staff providing care. Following guidelines from the hospital's COVID-19 oversight committee, the Department of Professional Practice and Education rapidly initiated education on several key topics. This was accomplished by teamwork within the department to quickly identify priorities and suspend noncritical programs. Multiple training methods were deployed while a smaller group of educators developed additional training. Sixty to seventy percent of 1015 staff were trai...

Institutional COVID-19 Protocols: Focused on Preparation, Safety, and Care Consolidation
As the confirmed cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) continue to grow with over 1 million documented infections in the United States alone, researchers and health care workers race to find effective treatment options for this potentially fatal disease. Mortality remains high in patients whose disease course requires mechanical ventilation and admission to intensive care units. While focusing on therapies to decrease mortality is essential, we must also consider the logistical hurdles faced with regard to safely and effectively delivering treatment while limiting the risk of harm to hospita...
