Social Support Effectiveness of the Mental Health of Immigrants Living in Belgium
AbstractThe increase in immigration has required social workers to focus more on this field and understand the social support systems of immigrants and the effects of their relationships with these systems to improve their effectiveness. Subsequently, this study examined the perceived social support, psychological resilience and coping strategies of immigrants living in Belgium, which has a significant immigrant population compared with its population. It ’s up to you: The need for self-directed learning for social work students on placement during COVID-19
SummaryCOVID-19 in 2020 took social work programmes by surprise and for many students an e-placement was offered as the only alternative learning opportunity to complete their placement that year. In this article, we report on a mixed method study with data collected via an online survey with quantitative and qualitative questions exploring students ’ experiences in e-placements. Eighty-two students who had undertaken an e-placement responded to the survey that was sent to 1,500 social work students enrolled in twenty-one Australian universities. The results summarise demographic data about the students and a description...

A reinterrogation of South African child welfare discourse: A case for decolonisation?
AbstractRelying on discourse analysis and critical social work, this article explores the relevance of a decolonisation discourse to South African child welfare. A child welfare discourse of coloniality emerges from Australia, New Zealand and Canada. This emphasises the role that colonisation has played in eradicating indigenous persons or alternately assimilating subjugated populations to Western norms and sensibilities and maintains that coloniality persists in contemporary child welfare. South African child welfare has not been explicitly problematised as furthering coloniality. There have been transformation efforts po...

In Search of Transformative Practice: Outreach Work Tactics for Perpetuating Symbolic Boundaries
This article contains an in-depth analysis of outreach work practice with marginalised homeless individuals in the Belgian city of Antwerp. We identified three conceptual distinctions important for the construction of symbolic boundaries: predictability, complexity and housing readiness. Our analysis identifies a range of tactics used by outreach workers to transform these boundaries. Such tactics may be helpful for social workers interested in transformational practice in contexts where challenging the mainstream is not seen as a mandate for outreach workers.
