Anticipated Alienation and Critical Social Work: Ex-Offenders ’ Perspectives on Re-entry
AbstractThe criminal justice system constrains social workers ’ ability to practice critical social work. Given the increased rates of re-entry from prison into disenfranchised, minority communities in the USA, knowledge about re-entry should be made available to social workers wishing to assist those who suffer from extreme marginalisation and oppression du ring re-entry. In this qualitative research study, we interviewed American male halfway house residents (N = 21) in the lead-up to their release about their perspectives on returning to their communities of origin, settling into other communities and meeting indi...

The Ethical Conflict of Dual Obligations Amongst Social Workers: The Role of Organisational Affiliation and Seniority
AbstractThe purpose of the current study was to examine the frequency of ethical conflicts amongst social workers, deriving from dual obligations to clients and employers, as associated with their organisational affiliation and professional seniority. The sample included 723 social workers from three organisational sectors in Israel: the government sector, the third sector and the for-profit sector. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to examine the main and interaction effects of organisational affiliation and seniority on the frequency of ethical conflicts amongst social workers. Social workers in the for-...

Successful Community Resettlement of Men with Learning Disabilities Who Have Completed a Hospital-Based Treatment for Sexual Offending
AbstractTreatment for sexual offending equips men with learning disabilities with tools required for pro-social community living. In the past, risk aversiveness prevented discharges from hospital, but fieldwork took place at the time of the Transforming Care Agenda, which sought to enable more people to return to their communities. This offered the opportunity to gain unique insights into community resettlement planning in cases that require ongoing risk management. Eleven case studies were examined through qualitative interviews with the men and professionals. A realist evaluation methodology was applied to examine how tr...

Identity as Discourse: ‘The Person in Need of Guardianship’
This article presents a critical discussion of the legal institution of adult guardianship in Israel. Based on a critical discourse analysis ’ study of official guardianship reports for older adults submitted by social workers to family courts in Israel, findings reveal how guardianship institutional procedures construct the personal life stories of older persons into legalistic guardianship paradigm, and in doing so they create a new identity of ‘a person in need of guardianship’. The article further delineates how ‘a person in need of guardianship’ (as well as a ‘guardian’) is a discursive identity, a subje...

Developing a Poverty-Aware Pedagogy: From Paradigm to Reflexive Practice in Post-Academic Social Work Education
AbstractSocial work scholars have argued that poverty reminds us of the necessary commitment to educate professional social workers. Being inspired by a conceptual framework that captures how poverty-awareness can be the subject of teaching in social work programmes, this article offers a qualitative analysis of the reflections being made by a cohort of students about their learning process in a post-academic course. Five common themes are discussed: (i) from recognising micro-aggressions to tackling macro-aggressions; (ii) poverty is an instance of social injustice and requires collective indignation; (iii) notions of com...

Workplace Violence Against Domestic and Family Violence and Sexual Assault Workers: A Gendered, Settings-Based Approach
AbstractViolence against social workers and other social service practitioners is prevalent across countries and service delivery settings, often accepted as implicit in working with vulnerable clients. A corresponding scholarly focus on workplace violence, and the factors that affect it, is, however, still developing. This is particularly stark in the domestic and family violence (DFV) and sexual assault (SA) sectors. To address this gap, this article explores the extent and impact of practitioners ’ exposure to workplace violence, and the mix of work and organisational factors that predict it. Analysis of survey data f...
