Comorbid mental health disorders in children and young people with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorders
Advances in Mental Health and Intellectual Disabilities, Ahead of Print. Reducing antipsychotic medication in ID using QI methodology
Advances in Mental Health and Intellectual Disabilities, Ahead of Print. Purpose Research highlights that antipsychotic medications are prescribed more in people with Intellectual Disability (ID) without a diagnosis of severe mental illness. Despite non-pharmacological interventions recommended as alternatives, their application can be challenging due to heterogeneity of the patient group. The purpose of this paper is to discuss application of quality improvement (QI) methodology in adapting interventions, aiming to reduce challenging behaviour of people with ID, thereby reducing use of antipsychotic medication. Design/m...

Catatonia in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and intellectual disability: a discussion of four cases
Advances in Mental Health and Intellectual Disabilities, Ahead of Print. Purpose Catatonia is increasingly recognised as a comorbid syndrome of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASDs). The assessment and management of individuals with comorbid ASD and intellectual disability (ID) adds a further dimension to this already complex presentation, with few cases identified in the literature. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach This paper presents four cases of catatonia in individuals with comorbid ASD and ID. The diagnostic challenges, response to treatment and prognosis are discussed whilst comparing ...

Psychiatric assessment in congenital blindness, ASD and ID: experience from two clinical cases
Advances in Mental Health and Intellectual Disabilities, Ahead of Print. Purpose Psychiatric assessment in adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID) is complex and challenging. With co-occurring congenital blindness, this complexity is increased. Systematic knowledge about psychiatric assessment in this combination of challenges is virtually non-existing, and there is little guidance available for clinicians faced with this task. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach Experiences from comprehensive psychiatric assessments in two adults with congenital blindne...

Using positive behavioural support (PBS) for STOMP medication challenge
This study indicates that providing PBS is associated with decreased medication and if replicated should be become standard practice for specialist teams. Originality/value This is the first study to investigate the effect of PBS on medication reduction in patients prescribed psychotropic medication for behaviour thought to be challenging. A systematic review of fidelity measurements in complex interventions for people with intellectual disabilities and behaviours that challenge
Advances in Mental Health and Intellectual Disabilities, Ahead of Print. Purpose Fidelity data in clinical trials are not only necessary for appraising the internal and external validity, but also could provide useful insights how to improve the application of an intervention in everyday settings. The purpose of this paper is to understand the current literature of fidelity measurements in complex interventions for people with intellectual disabilities (ID) and behaviours that challenge. Design/methodology/approach The electronic databases MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science and CINAHL Plus were searched for studie...
