Sex Trafficking: A Literature Review With Implications for Health Care Providers
Sex trafficking often goes unrecognized, yet is a pervasive issue that disproportionately affects marginalized populations. Survivors suffer adverse health effects and often present to health care facilities while still under control of their traffickers. Health care providers, including nurses and advanced practice nurses, lack understanding of risk factors, signs and symptoms, and means of offering assistance. A comprehensive literature search was conducted utilizing EBSCOhost and WorldCat. Studies were considered eligible for inclusion if subject matter dealt directly with domestic sex trafficking and included implicati...

Cultivating a Resiliency Model for Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit Staff Through Peer Support: A Program Description
Emergency department (ED) and intensive care unit (ICU) staff experience significant and ongoing exposure to mental health trauma due to the extremely high number of tragic cases consistently seen. Despite awareness of the magnitude of this problem, there is a scarcity of clinical efforts directed toward reducing and managing secondary traumatic stress and vicarious trauma. In an effort to promote resiliency in these frontline workers, we describe development and implementation of the Adapted Peer Support Resiliency Program (APSRP), a psychoeducational and cognitive reframing behavioral-based program equipped with peer sup...

Analysis of Patients With Bed Bugs in the Emergency Department
The objective was to evaluate the clinical characteristics, triage information, diagnostic evaluation, and disposition for emergency department patients with and without bed bug infestation. A retrospective case–control study of patients with and without bed bugs was performed from February 1, 2011, through February 1, 2017. Cases (n = 332) and controls (n = 4,952) were matched by age, sex, and emergency department location. Patient characteristics and clinical information were compared between groups. On univariable and multivariable analysis, patients with bed bugs had higher heart rate, lower systolic blood pressure, ...

Postpartum Hemorrhage: Emergency Management for Uncontrolled Vaginal Bleeding
Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) represents total cumulative blood loss in excess of 1,000 ml or blood loss accompanied by signs and/or symptoms of hypovolemia within 24 hr following birth (The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists [ACOG], 2017). As a large number of PPHs occur in low-risk women (ACOG, 2019), the emergency nurse practitioner must be prepared to identify and manage this uncommon but life-threatening condition. The etiology, pharmacological management strategies, and other interventions are reviewed in an algorithmic approach. This organized approach not only supports maternal survival during PPH bu...

Chest X-Ray Findings in Patients With COVID-19 Pneumonia
Currently, there are limited research and reports on how a chest radiograph plays a role in the treatment of COVID-19 patients, but some of the findings up to now have demonstrated that they are useful in specific situations, such as when symptoms are severe, other testing is limited, and an acute outbreak occurs (Blain et al., 2021). As referenced by Rubin et al. (2020) a consensus statement made by the Fleischner Society recommended that imagining should not be ordered in patients with mild symptoms, but it can be used in diagnosing COVID-19 if deemed necessary. Chest radiography is a relatively inexpensive, quick imagin...

Preseptal Cellulitis Versus Orbital Cellulitis: A Pediatric Case
Eye infection with or without swelling is a common complaint in pediatric patients. It commonly affects the eyelid, which can be confused with an insect bite, orbital pseudotumor, or panophthalmitis. The article highlights the differences between preseptal and orbital cellulitis. Preseptal and orbital cellulitis originate from other infections because of the thin bone barrier that separates the eye from other facial structures. The clinical manifestations of preseptal and orbital cellulitis may be perplexing, and emergency nurse practitioners must distinguish between the two infections. The incorrect diagnosis may lead to ...

Lessons Learned: A Case of Intimate Partner Violence During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been a major public health threat long before COVID-19. However, the pandemic has removed protective measures from victims, while heightening risk factors associated with IPV. Emergency department providers are often the initial point of contact in the health care system for IPV victims; therefore, knowledge of current screening guidelines and best practices in assessment and management of IPV is essential. The purpose of this case report is to present a missed opportunity involving IPV in an emergency department during the COVID-19 pandemic and to discuss the lessons learned with the ai...

Ruling Out a Myocardial Infarction Safely in 30 Minutes: Implications for APRN Practice
This Research to Practice column assists to provide emergency advanced practice registered nurses an exploration of current evidence to establish implications for practice change within emergency care settings. The article, “Rapid Rule-Out of Myocardial Infarction After 30 Minutes as an Alternative to 1 Hour: The RACING-MI Cohort Study” by Bang et al. (2022), seeks to examine whether non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction identified on an electrocardiogram can be safely ruled out among a population of low-risk patients who present to the emergency department (ED) with undifferentiated acute chest pain. The stud...

Descriptive Epidemiology of Women in the Emergency Department With Gonorrhea and Chlamydial Infection in the United States
Demographic characteristics, risk factors, and clinical variables associated with gonorrhea and chlamydial infection in women being treated in emergency departments (EDs) in the United States are incompletely characterized. We used univariable and multivariable regression analyses on 17,411 encounters from women 18 years and older who presented to EDs in northeast Ohio and were tested for gonorrhea or chlamydial infection. There were 1,360 women (7.8%) who had Chlamydia trachomatis infection and 510 (2.9%) who had Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection. Those infected with C. trachomatis or N. gonorrhoeae were younger (23.8 vs. 2...
