Introducing the Pathology Hashtag Ontology
The past two years have seen an explosion in the amount of pathology content being tweeted and in the number of pathologists active on Twitter.   Pathology is perhaps even more suited to Twitter than many other medical fields because for most pathologists, the bulk of our daily work revolves around the interpretation of images for the diagnosis of human disease. Twitter allows us to easily share images of amazing cases with one another, an d we can also discuss new controversies,…Continued (Source: Connecting the dots in healthcare social media – Symplur)

Tweeting for the Greater Good – How #SPSM Makes a Difference
A study recently published in JAMA Internal Medicine stated that Charlie Sheen’s HIV-positive disclosure “corresponded with the greatest number of HIV-related Google searches ever recorded in the United States.” For better or worse, celebrity health news has the potential to create more awareness for a given condition than the most carefully planned outreach campaigns by respected health organizations. The term “15 minutes of fame”, it seems, may be applied to more than just a passing fad or Internet meme – … Continued (Source: Connecting the dots in healthcare social media – Symplur)

Health Wonk Review: Tales of the Trump
Had enough of Donald Trump by now? Well, you’d better do something about it unless you want to have to listen to him for another four years or more. I start this Health Wonk Review off with a couple Trumpy topics before moving on to the usual wonkery. Trump may be the first major party candidate with fascist tendencies, but his healthcare proposals are just the usual Republican pap with a few pieces of Obamacare and socialism thrown in for good measure.  NCPA’s Health Policy Blog gives us the rundown. As Health Care Renewal tells it, many nutritional supplements are akin to the old snake oil remedies. Cons...

Time for a "no dickheads" rule
This article notes: Much of the polarization dividing American politics was fueled not just by gerrymandering or money in politics or the other oft-cited variables, but by an unnoticed but surprisingly large electoral group — authoritarians. This trend had been accelerated in recent years by demographic and economic changes such as immigration, which "activated" authoritarian tendencies, leading many Americans to seek out a strongman leader who would preserve a status quo they feel is under threat and impose order on a world they perceive as increasingly alien. There was never a more important time for people of inf...

Mateship
You can't be here in Australia for very long before hearing about the concept of "mateship."  Here are some explanations:Wikipedia says: "Mateship is an Australian cultural idiom that embodies equality, loyalty and friendship."But it goes further than that.  This government site says:'Mateship' is a concept that can be traced back to early colonial times. The harsh environment in which convicts and new settlers found themselves meant that men and women closely relied on each other for all sorts of help. In Australia, a 'mate' is more than just a friend. It's a term that implies a sense of shared experience, m...

What can I do? May Wong answered the question.
The most common question I get--worldwide--after I give a talk or seminar on creating a learning organization to improve clinical processes in hospitals is:  "I really like what you are saying, but what can I do if those above me in the organization have not adopted the philosophy you espouse."  I respond by saying, "Start small, and just try to get something fixed in your area, working with other like-minded people. Maybe the ideas will spread organically. Maybe they won't, but at least you will have made things better for some."Well, May Wong from Sydney didn't need my advice.  My buddy Sarah Dalton at the...

Happy 11th birthday to the Health Business Blog
The Health Business Blog has turned 11 years old! Continuing a tradition I established with birthdays one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten I have picked out a favorite post from each month. Thanks for continuing to read the blog! March 2015: Sovaldi – a near-perfect example of price discrimination The controversy over the pricing of Gilead’s Sovaldi for Hepatitis C is a textbook example of price discrimination in action. My quick review of the economic principles involved helped explain the situation. April 2015: E-cigarettes – the California Cooler of the 21st century If...

Staff at work
One of the great pleasures of being ex-CEO of a hospital is to visit other places around the world and see the staff in action.  Whatever you might have heard about the stresses and problems faced by doctors and nurses and others, there remains an underlying sense of purpose and commitment that often shines through. Here's a example, from the theatre in which young patients at Royal Children's Hospital receive lumbar punctures and bone marrow tests to receive chemotherapy and/or to assess their progress with regard to leukemia treatments.  I offer the explanation totally in pictures, which pretty well tell the sto...

Most young men don’t know about emergency contraception. Is that ok?
About 40 percent of adolescent boys and young men know about emergency contraception, aka the “morning after pill” or Plan B according to a Journal of Adolescent Health study. Women who take the pill within a few days of unprotected sex or a condom break can avoid an unwanted pregnancy because emergency contraception prevents ovulation. So how should we think about the 40 percent number? The authors are pleased that the number is as high as it is, and take it as proof that educational campaigns are working. They’d also like to see the number go higher so that boys and men take responsibility for contracep...
