What will the future look like in the healthcare field?
My local hospital recently enacted temporary employee pay cuts and benefit suspensions and it caught me off guard. As a nontraditional student who is working towards the goal of becoming a physician, it made me wonder what the economy/job market will look like once I complete. Now I have three years before I even apply to medical school (1 year left of bachelor's & 2 years for DIY), but I would like to fully understand what I am getting into. Is this happening everywhere? Should I be... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Job offer suddenly rescinded, does my new gap year back-up plan make sense?
Hi all, wanted to post and ask to see if my back-up plan makes sense. My job offer was rescinded due to the "economy", so I've been scrambling to come up with a new plan and was seeking feedback on it to make sure I'm still on a good track. Background info: Graduating senior, Ivy undergrad, MCAT 518 (taken Jan 2023), 3.85 cGPA/3.75 sGPA. Taking 2 gap years (applying June 2024). 2300 hours research across 3 labs (2 posters at national conferences presenting author, 1 first author paper... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Effect of banking crisis and economic downturn on rads job market?
With all the tech layoffs, high inflation, SVB collapse and possible impending downfall of more banks, it looks like the economy will be in a rough shape for at least a couple years. Nobody can predict the future but what would be your guesses on how this would affect the rads job market, particularly for trainees who will be looking for a job in 2-3 years? My fear would be a situation like in 2012/13 when some people had to do multiple fellowships just to find a job. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

When will the economy collapse?
Follow up to my thread: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=483449 How would a recession affect us. There were a couple of people saying there was no recession. Now the US economy is on the brink of collapse. The question is when. I have a bad feeling that it will start this week following Bear Sterns illiquidity. What do think? When will it happen? A month, 2 mo, 6 mo? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Stock, the economy and the Fed for 2023
Let’s start off with a prediction that gold catches a bid finally towards $2,000. This is just catch up for the inflation in 2022. It’s a slog in terms of stocks for the first half until the Fed drives inflation under 4%. That could happen this year. I predict a big rally at some point in 2023 of 10 percent or more. I’m a buyer of chip stocks this winter and expect an uptick in this sector for 2024. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Type of Job to look for in a gap year?
So I just finished my 6 month contract as a data analyst and was not re-hired, and am looking to move back with family (much love to today's economy). So I will be moving states and can start fresh on all activities. So my biggest question is what job should I focus on to try to get next in my job hunt? I am looking to get a job as a Patient Care Assistant (PCA), Research Assistant, or a job which not many premeds tend to do (CS/data analyst jobs. Initially I was trying to pursue this field... Obesity is associated with central µ-opioid receptor (MOR) downregulation
Mesolimbic opioid-dopamine interaction is disrupted in obesity but recovered by weight loss following bariatric surgery - Translational Psychiatry Obesity is a growing burden to health and the economy worldwide. Obesity is associated with central µ-opioid receptor (MOR) downregulation and disruption of the interaction between MOR and dopamine D2 receptor (D2R) system in the ventral striatum. Irrational Exuberance
Something very bizarre is happening with the job market. The main drivers of our little economy have not changed - number of ROs, number of cancer patients, number of fractions all within a FFS system. We are net positive on docs, net negative on number of patients, net negative on number of fractions and the reimbursement is going down. And yet, based on not just my perception, but talking to many PGY5s and people 1-2 years out - the market is on fire. Caveat - these are almost all... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Recession = good?
Anyone actually hoping for a real recession? Some would argue we are in one now- but extremely low unemployment, robust consumer spending and strong wage growth make that a paper recession only. On the upside, a real recession would do more to curb this ridiculous inflation than anything the fed can do. The downside is that the stock market would take further hit, although hard to see how much. I think a real recession would do a lot to reset the us economy and might be good long... Title is self-explanatory. Is anyone considering just doing general cards and making money now that the economy is going to ****? I’m losing motivation to sub-specialize by the day it seems like. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Demographics, Collapse of the Consumer Economy and the Fate of Healthcare
Im pondering more and more what healthcare will look like in the US and abroad in 20-50 years. Right now physicians regardless of geography face massive governmental wage controls. UK, EU, Asia or US it doesnt matter. Even in the US system of fee for service, CMS tightly controls physician pay and has been consistently dropping payment as volumes go up due to the older demographic wave coming. Now, fast forward to a massive coming drop in labor participation due to the collapsing... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

CASPer Scenario For Discussion #31
The corporate tax rate allows corporations to be taxed less than individuals get taxed on their personal income. Those against the concept of corporate taxes being lower argue that it propagates class differences between the upper classes (who typically own corporations) and the lower classes. Those in favor of the idea argue that this allows for business development in the economy and so everyone benefits from it at the end of the day. What is your opinion on this... Do Economic Recessions Affect Availability of Residency Spots?
Curious if anyone that went through the match process back in the Global Financial Crisis 2007-2009 remembers if there were suddenly a lack of available spots?
