American Weapons in Yemen: A Cautionary Tale
CNNbrokean important story today outlining how Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have intentionally transferred American-made weapons to violent non-state actors. Intended as a government to government sale, everything from American rifles to Oshkosh armored vehicles to TOW anti-tank missiles have made their way into the hands of “Al Qaeda-linked fighters, hard-line Salafi militias, and other factions waging war in Yemen. ”Although the extent of the problem in Yemen is disturbing, the illegal dispersion of American weapons is nothing new. And the fact that Saudi Arabia and the UAE are unreliable customers...

Dentists and Freedom in Ivory Coast
I heard a report this morning on BBC Newshour on the shortage of dentists in Ivory Coast (Cote d ’Ivoire). I can’t find the report at theNewshour website, but here ’ssomething similar from CNBCAfrica, coauthored by a Unilever representative. It ’s a sad story of disease, pain, and school absenteeism. But stories like this miss the point. Why does Ivory Coast have so few dentists? Why does the Gates Foundation need to buymosquito nets for African countries? It ’s not because there’s something special about dentists and mosquito nets. It’s because African countries are poor. And they’re poor because they lack ...

These dry seeds become the basic ingredient for chocolate. Chocolate production has been plagued by the use of child labor with many companies unable or unwilling to halt the practice. Zika virus spread
Zika virus has been known to circulate in parts of sub-Saharan Africa for many years since its first isolation in Uganda in 1947-48, and it probably spread to south-east Asia in about 1945-50. Two major lineages then evolved, one in Africa and one in Asia, where it caused a relatively minor disease of fever with a rash and arthralgia. The virus spread from Asia to Yap in 2007 causing the largest known outbreak of human disease, and from Asia to the South Pacific in 2013-14, including French Polynesia where it caused an explosive outbreak with over 28,000 cases, and subsequently spread to Cook Islands, Easter Island, and Ne...

Where Do K-1 Visa Holders Come From?
Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik were killed last week in a gun battle with police after they committed a mass shooting in San Bernardino, California.  Malik entered the U.S. on a K-1 visa, known as the fiancé visa, accompanied by Farook.  Their attack is the first perpetrated by somebody on the K-1 visa - igniting a debate over increasing visa security.    The government issued approximately 262,162 K-1 visas from 2005 to 2013 – 3177 or 1.21 percent of the total to Pakistani citizens.  Senator Rand Paul’s (R-KY) SECURE Act identifies 34 countries as particularly terror-prone.  There were 32,363 K-1 visa, 12.34 pe...
