What Are Options for Acne Treatment?
Discussion Acne vulgaris or acne is a problem of the pilosebaceous follicle. It occurs most prominently where sebaceous glands are abundant especially the face, neck, and upper back. Sebum production increases because of androgens. Keratin and sebum clog the pores of the pilosebaceous unit causing hyperkeratosis (clogged pilosebaceous unit = clogged pores = comedomes). Propionibacterium acnes, a gram-negative anaerobe, multiplies in the sebaceous unit causing an inflammatory reaction resulting in moderate or severe acne. Skin lesions include: Comedomal acne has comedomes White heads = closed comedomes Black heads = open...

Malaria-Like Parasite From Ticks Spreading To U.K. Through Dogs
Mepron, a thick liquid antimicrobial drug used to treat Babesia and malaria, as well as a fungal infection called Pneumocystitis carinii. In 2011, the United Kingdom stopped requiring that dogs brought into the country be inspected for ticks. Earlier this year, several dogs tested positive for babesia, a malaria-like disease transmitted to ticks that previously had only been found in foreign. These dogs had never left the U.K. While babesiosis is a new worry to U.K. dog owners, it's been a threat to human beings for years -- it just hasn't become a health-scare-of-the-week like Zika, West Nile, avian and swine flu. Millions Wrongly Think They Have Penicillin Allergy
BOSTON (CBS) – Claire Branman is among the millions of Americans who think they have a penicillin allergy. It’s something that’s been listed on her medical records since she was a kid, “because my mom told me when I was a baby I had an allergic reaction,” she told WBZ-TV. At 26 years old, Claire is now getting an allergy test to find out for sure. And here’s why: “Ten-to-fifteen percent of the U.S. population thinks that they are allergic to penicillin. But, in actuality less than one-percent are truly allergic to penicillin,” explained Dr. Aleena Banerji, an allergist at Mas...

Choosing An Antibiotic For Skin Infections--What's Best?
A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine on treatment of skin infections compares treatment with trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX, Bactrim or Septra) or clindamycin. Surprisingly, both worked equally well in this 524 patient study, curing about 89% of outpatients with uncomplicated skin infections cellulitis and abscesses, so the authors appear to encourage use of one of these drugs because they are better at treating MRSA than are currently recommended antibiotics. Pets can carry the MRSA superbug
Conclusion This was a laboratory study looking at genetic similarities between the MRSA samples found in cats and dogs and those in human populations, suggesting that the infection may pass between the two. Although the results are worrying it should be noted that on an individual level, MRSA in pets is still rare. However it’s important to stick to strict hygiene practices to prevent MRSA in either the human or animal population. The results may influence future antibiotic prescribing patterns in animals as well encouraging a holistic approach towards treating infections; where we consider both the needs of humans ...
