Inequalities in the Distribution of National Institutes of Health Research Project Grant Funding
We present the data in descending order of funding. The PI with the most funding appears at the top, and the PI with the least funding on the bottom. The columns in the table are:
PI name (“A” through “J”)
Funding: the amount of funding in support of each PI
Cumulative Funding: the total amount of funding supporting that PI and all other PIs receiving higher levels of funding (higher up in the Table)
Cumulative Proportion of Funding: the proportion of total funding (in percent) supporting that PI and all other PIs receiving higher levels of funding.

Public Health Surveillance Activities Deemed Not to Be Research
The revised Common Rule identifies certain public health surveillance activities as being excluded from applicability of the Common Rule. Although we anticipate that the determination of NIH-funded research qualifying as a public health surveillance activity will be extremely rare, NIH will have a process for requesting use of this exclusion.

New FY 2020 RCDC Categories and Funding Data are Available (Including for Coronaviruses)
NIH recently updated its Research, Condition, and Disease Classification (RCDC) system with FY 2020 actual spending data and estimates for FY 2021 and 2022.
“Coronaviruses” is a new category as part of this update. This category covers Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), and all types of other coronaviruses.
