OMB Expiration Dates on Application Forms To Be Updated Soon
Grants.gov and NIH are working hard to complete preparations for our transition to FORMS-H application packages. Although we’ll be all set well before our January 25, 2023 due dates, you may see some forms in FORMS-H application packages that still show old expiration dates. For example, the Research & Related or R&R forms managed by Grants.gov may still reflect a 12/31/2022 date although they were recently re-approved by the Office of Management and Budget for continued use. Also, the Public Health Services (PHS) application forms NIH updated to support the data sharing policy changes may still reflect the 09/30...

Check for Fit, Before You Submit!
It takes quite a bit of time to prepare and submit a grant application. Imagine spending that time only to find out later that you submitted to the wrong opportunity. Funding opportunity announcements (FOAs) contain a lot of information. Most applicants are very good at reading the FOA description to ensure a good topic fit, but let’s look at a few less obvious items that are often overlooked. Does your application fit within the mission of one of the participating institutes or centers? If we can’t make an assignment, your application will be withdrawn. Does your Type of Application (New, Resubmission, Revision, Rene...

Update on Simplifying Review Criteria: A Request for Information
Discussions are underway to incorporate consideration of a Plan for Enhancing Diverse Perspectives (PEDP) and rigorous review of clinical trials RPGs (~10% of RPGs are clinical trials) within the proposed framework. Simplified Review Criteria NIH proposes to reorganize the five review criteria into three factors, with Factors 1 and 2 receiving a numerical score. Reviewers will be instructed to consider all three factors (Factors 1, 2 and 3) in arriving at their Overall Impact Score (scored 1-9), reflecting the overall scientific and technical merit of the application. Factor 1: Importance of the Research (Significance, In...

Funding Opportunity RFA-NS-22-069 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is designed to support integrated efforts of three or more (up to six) PDs/PIs to pursue bold, impactful, and challenging research in basic and clinical pain domains to understand the biology of specific human pain conditions as well as pain associated with diverse diseases/disorders, including mechanistic underpinning of heterogeneity and stratification of patients with specific pain conditions and co-morbidities. The research approach should be interdisciplinary in nature, and the research teams a...

FORMS-H: Instructions, Forms, and a Handy Checklist
Hopefully, you’ve seen our notices (NOT-OD-22-195, NOT-OD-23-012), tweets, and previous Nexus posts (FORMS-H Coming for January 2023 Due Dates, Gearing Up for Transition to FORMS-H Application Forms, data sharing posts, genomic data sharing posts) regarding our pending transition to an updated set of grant application forms we refer to as FORMS-H and the implementation of new Data Management and Sharing (DMS) requirements. If so, you already know that you must use FORMS-H forms for grant application due dates on or after January 25, 2023 and that our forms and instructions have been updated to support the new sharing ...

Where Should My Data Management and Sharing Plan Be Included in My Application for Funding?
For applications being developed for due dates on/after January 25, 2023, Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plans will be collected in a NEW field called “Other Plans” on the PHS 398 Research Plan and Career Development Award forms. See Writing a DMS Plan for the details on what to include in a Plan. Note that any costs to support data management and sharing should be accounted for in either the R&R Detailed Budget Form or the PHS 398 Modular Budget Form along with a brief justification of those costs. See Budgeting for DMS and the Application Instructions for details. (Source: NIH Extramural Nexus)

Data on Number of Research Project Grants per Principal Investigator
Earlier this year, we posted a blog about inequalities in Research Project Grant (RPG) support for extramural principal investigators (PIs). The blog was based on a paper we published in which we showed, among other things, that well-funded PIs not only were supported by more money but also by a larger number of distinct grants. Over 80% of the PIs in the top centile (top 1%) of funding were supported by two or more grants, compared to only 33% of the PIs in the bottom 99%. Many comments to that post requested data on time-related trends of number of RPGs supporting individual PIs. Figure 1 shows exactly that. In Fiscal Ye...

Preliminary Data on Childcare Cost Support for National Research Service Award (NRSA) Individual Fellows
In April 2021, recognizing the high cost of childcare, NIH began allowing recipients of full-time National Research Service Awards (NRSA) fellowships to request support for childcare costs. Fellows could make these requests in new and continuation applications or as administrative supplements to existing awards. Each fellow is now eligible to receive up to $2,500 per budget period to defray childcare costs. Here, we share preliminary data on childcare cost requests and issuances. NIH received 229 childcare requests in fiscal year (FY) 2021 and 357 requests in FY 2022 from NRSA fellows (Table 1). We issued 228 childcare cos...

Implementation Updates for the New NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy
Dr. Lyric Jorgenson, Acting Associate Director for Science Policy and Acting Director of the NIH Office of Science Policy As we work towards the January 25, 2023 effective date of the new NIH Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy, we continue to develop resources and implementation information to help the community prepare (see recently released NOT-OD-22-189). For some scientific communities, data sharing is already standard and things will largely be business as usual. For others, this policy may require some pretty big adjustments. We acknowledge that there will be a learning curve. We will be supporting you with add...

NIH All About Grants Podcast – Sex As a Biological Variable
Dr. Chyren Hunter, Associate Director for Basic and Translational Research,NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health NIH expects that sex as a biological variable (SABV) will be factored into research designs, analyses, and reporting in pre-clinical and clinical studies. Accounting for SABV helps interpret and validate research findings, as well as enhances the rigor, reproducibility, and applicability of biomedical research. But how exactly do you account for SABV? Dr. Chyren Hunter with the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health explains more in this NIH All About Grants podcast episode (MP3 / Transcript). She out...
