5th Anniversary of Diabetes Art Day! Do the Survey.
I can’t believe this will be the fifth year of diabetes art day (February 3, 2014). Diabetes art day is always a special event, but this seems extra special to me. I had a chance to talk with Lee Ann about it recently, and she’s taking things to a whole new level with this one. You know she’s gone back to school to become Dr. Thill, which I think is incredible. She is an incredible asset to those of us who need help straightening out the mess that diabetes creates inside of our heads. Diabetes Art Day: Pre-Event Survey This year she is hoping we can help her with some research around how working in the cr...

It’s just weird…
We accept it because it is part of the world we’ve been thrown into. Some of us, myself included, are even thankful. Being able to measure it instead of how things used to be is a huge improvement. But there is nothing not weird about cutting ourselves over and over again to bleed on things. Does this make you squirm? It should! Why? Because I’M BLEEDING!! So not normal. I’ll do it again, on purpose, in another hour or so. Manageable my ass… 158 mg/dl, btw. It’s just weird… is a post from: Scott's Diabetes (Source: Scott's Diabetes Blog)

The Protection Genes?
I had my diabetic eye exam yesterday. Nearly 34 years of type 1 diabetes and the doctor said he couldn’t see any sign of diabetes. Not a thing. Whew… I’d been given news of another year (actually two years since my last visit) without a complication from diabetes. I felt relieved, but it was mixed with what my friend Scott Strange calls Survivor’s Guilt. Why have I managed to avoid complications even though my blood sugars and A1C’s aren’t always great (who’s are)? Why do others with a long history of BG’s much better than mine struggle terribly with complications? It doesn&...

“I See Donations In Your Future…”
It has been over six years since I first joined TuDiabetes. To this day they are still one of the very first resources I mention when people are looking for information about a specific subject, product, problem, or just aren’t quite sure where to start with this whole online diabetes thing. Why? Because TuDiabetes is a large and active community made up of people much like you and I who have a healthy mix of questions and answers, experiences and opinions. It’s a special place to me. While blogs will probably always be my home and first place I turn to with my free time, I will always have a lot of love and su...

Incongruous Images
Pretty soon I depart for Vienna, Austria to hang out with the mySugr crew for a couple weeks. I’m very excited – I’ve never been to Europe, and Vienna sounds like an incredible site to see. I’m also looking forward to meeting the incredible people at mySugr. I see them nearly every day via Skype, but it’s not quite the same as being in the same office. They are brilliant people, every last one of them. I’m going to learn so much. As I packed my bags and prepared my diabetes supplies I was struck by this image. A mountain of medicine I feel in better health right now than I have in a very...

Running 8k in Philly – AWESOME!
I had two thoughts when I received the invite to run an 8k race and speak at the Insulindependence Philadelphia Weekend: Cool! Holy crap! 8k? I better start training! 8k is just about 5 miles. Well outside of my comfort zone, but not so far outside that it felt unachievable. The Insulindependence group provided a training plan that looked realistic, and I started following it – to the letter – on day 1 of week 1. The Training Plan Run 20 minutes. Yikes. I haven’t done that for over a decade. I play basketball, and do some biking, and have experimented with some running (run 2 mins, walk 1, run 2, etc)...

Diabetes Won’t Stop Me
I’m a big fan of the folks at Jerry the Bear, and my love and support for Kim and her work is almost as true and strong as my love for Diet Coke. When they came up with this idea, I couldn’t wait to add my contribution! I can’t wait to see the other videos and pictures. The rest of my World Diabetes Day is packed with fun activities as well! As this post is published, I’ll be arriving at the gym to complete my last scheduled training run for the Insulindependence Philadelphia Weekend. I’m really proud of myself for following this training plan. I’ve completed every single assignment wi...

Making it Available – Thank You Insulindependence!
Were you interested in the 14th North American Conference in Diabetes and Exercise that took place in August but couldn’t afford the hundreds of dollars for travel, lodging, registration, and accompanying expenses? I totally feel you, and so do the incredibly generous Corporate Members of Insulindependence and friends at Brown Hound Media. The entire conference, including the Greatest Award Show in Diabetes, is online for you to view completely free. For so many people living with diabetes, getting to events like this is just plain out of reach financially or logistically. I am so happy that Insulindependence has ma...

I Wear Medical ID
I wear medical ID. It’s something I feel strongly about, and worry over when I don’t have on. Most of the time I wear a bracelet and necklace, and also have stickers on my car. You might say I’m a bit paranoid about it. I would say rightfully so. But I’m also completely “out there” about my diabetes. I make a living telling the world about it. What about people who don’t want to broadcast their diabetes to the world? How can they protect themselves without complete disregard for their medical privacy? It’s a really tricky situation and there’s no easy answer. All of thi...

Slipstream in the US! Oh Yeah Baby!
It’s my honor (or “honour” as they might say up north… is that a bad Canadian joke?) to present a guest post by Jen Hansen  from Connected in Motion! What is the special occasion? Slipstream is coming to the United States, October 25-27, 2013! I’m so excited! In 2009, I attended my very first Slipstream event. In fact, it was the very first Slipstream event. Hosted by Connected in Motion, a Canadian-based Charity focused on creating community for adults with Type 1 diabetes and using physical activity and outdoor adventure as a forum, Slipstream weekends have become a staple in my own sanity...

1 Mile for Diabetes
While in San Diego for the Insulindependent event I met Doug Masiuk (@1RunAmerica) in person. I had heard of him, something about a crazy guy with type 1 diabetes who ran across the United States last year.  He and I had chatted via Twitter a time or two, but meeting him in person was a real thrill. He told me about a project he’s been working on, and I’d like to do my part to help spread the word. Doug needs all the help he can get with this, both for this year, and for upcoming years. He’s got a lot of people excited about supporting this, and a lot more who are interested in joining in. If you have ...

The Biggest Thanks – Insulindependence 2013 Athletic Achievement Award
Thank you Insulindependence, Tandem Diabetes Care, the DESA trailblazers, and the Diabetes Online Community! This post is long overdue. There are rumors of an actual trophy headed my way, and I was waiting for it to arrive before writing this. Maybe the engraver misspelled something and they had to start from scratch? It IS made out of the blood, sweat, and tears of exercising PWD’s, you know… Well worth the wait in my opinion. In August I was completely surprised and incredibly honored to receive the grand prize of the Insulindependence 2013 Athletic Achievement Award contest. What a blessing! So Many Thank...

mySugr’s Magic Monsters
I have been having so much fun working with the guys (and gals) at mySugr. They’ve been keeping me way more than busy, and I’m thrilled to say they’ve officially adopted me into their monsterpack. It’s been a fun experience so far, and I’ve been incredibly impressed with everyone I’ve encountered on the team so far. Not just satisfied, but absolutely impressed. They are a very talented group (in many ways) and I’m so happy to have an opportunity to learn from them. Many of them live with type 1 diabetes, which seems to add a little extra flavor of understanding and urgency to ever...
