Subway Sketch!
I’ve gotten into the habit of carrying my sketch tools in the NYC Subway, where there is no more interesting place to see the ebb and flow of humanity.  You need to sketch quick as people are constantly moving around and blocking your view.  Join me as I do a sketch in the Subway using (Source: Jeffrey M. Rediscovering my Art Supplies in the Arizona Desert
In 2013 I rediscovered my art supplies that were in storage for years, and decided to get reacquainted. So I threw sketchbooks, pens, and paints into a backpack and flew to Phoenix, rented a car, and drove out to the desert to commune with the warm sun, cactuses, and blazing sunsets. My plan was to find (Source: Jeffrey M. Levine MD | Geriatric Specialist | Wound Care | Pressure Ulcers)

Poetry in the Subway
The New York City subway is not the place you’d expect poety, but I try to capture it in my art.  I carry my sketchbooks every day down under the streets as I commute back and forth to work.  My on-the-spot sketches are done in pencil, fountainpen, ink markers, and occasionally watercolor. Sometimes I just (Source: Jeffrey M. Levine MD | Geriatric Specialist | Wound Care | Pressure Ulcers)

A Geriatrician Reviews Cicero ’s “On Old Age”
As a geriatrician entering the twilight of my career, I look to the philosophers of my field for guidance on how to navigate my own later years. In addition to contemporary texts and journals I turned toward the ancients and discovered a gem in the writings of Cicero, one of the greatest philosophers of the Roman Empire. The work is entitled De Senectute – Latin for “On Old Age.” Cicero wrote this in 44 BC, the year before he was executed at age 63 by Marc Antony’s henchmen for his alliance with Julius Caesar’s assassins and political opposition to the rulers of Rome. On Old Age is an optimistic discussion of t...

Watercolor and Urban Sketching in Italy
Last May I spent time in Rome and Tuscany, eating wonderful food, drinking wine, and sketching the city and countryside where opportunities to make and view art abound.  These are my choices of the best images from my trip. Take the stairs down to the banks of the Tiber River and you will find it (Source: Jeffrey M. Levine MD | Geriatric Specialist | Wound Care | Pressure Ulcers)

Combining Art and Medicine
I love the look and feel of old medical textbooks.  Their authorative aura was often enhanced by leather binding. They harken back to a time before the internet, when medical knowledge was priveliged information available to only a few. When I transformed this old medical textbook into a sketchbook I created a bridge between art (Source: Jeffrey M. Levine MD | Geriatric Specialist | Wound Care | Pressure Ulcers)

Views of a Lost Manhattan Landmark
I was saddened by the blaze that destroyed Beth Medrash Hagadol, the 167 year old landmarked synagogue on the Lower East Side.  The building was not in use since 2007, and I photographed this structure when it had an active congregation in 1987.  When I heard about the blaze I went down to pay my (Source: Jeffrey M. An Abandoned Psychiatric Hospital in Tuscany
Tuscany is an enchanting place filled with scenic beauty, but beneath the surface there is dark history. On a recent painting trip to Italy I had the opportunity to tour an abandoned psychiatric hospital in the town of Volterra. In the late 19th Century when it was opened, it was a state-of-the-art asylum that promoted (Source: Jeffrey M. Levine MD | Geriatric Specialist | Wound Care | Pressure Ulcers)

Jean Martin Charcot: Urban Sketcher
I have always been interested in physicians who incorporated art into their life and practice, and one of them was Jean Martin Charcot.   A towering figure in the medical world of the 19th Century, Charcot was born in 1825 and finished medical school at age 23.  He became director of the Saltpêtrière in Paris, an asylum for beggars, prostitutes and the insane, where he carried the title of Professor of Pathological Anatomy and developed this former gun factory into a center for neurology and neurophysiology.  His clinic attracted students from all over Europe, and he is remembered today for many diseases which bear h...
