Serge Voronoff and the History of Wound Care at the New York Academy of Medicine
Join me at the New York Academy of Medicine for the Tenth Annual History of Medicine and Public Health Night on Wednesday, January 30th, when I present my paper entitled Organotherapy, Gilded Manhattan, and Wound Healing Research in the Early 20th Century. This presentation will explore the unrecognized and forgotten contribution of Serge Voronoff (1866-1951) to wound healing research – a story that evolves against the backdrop of medical science and mansions of early 20th Century Manhattan.  Seeing the suffering of injured soldiers during World War 1, Voronoff realized the importance of hastening wound healing and it...

Wound Care in the Geriatrics Review Syllabus
The 10th Edition of the Geriatrics Review Syllabus is soon going to press, and I am pleased to announce that I authored the revised Pressure Injury and Wound Care chapter.  This chapter covers much of the material I wrote in the 9th Edition, but has critical updates including greater emphasis on palliative care for wounds and changes in nomenclature recommended by the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP), where I recently completed a three year term as a board member.  The full title of the publication is Geriatrics Review Syllabus: A Core Curriculum in Geriatric Medicine, 10th Edition (GRS10).  It is publishe...

Pressure Injuries and the Human Warranty
In this post I will discuss two recent articles that together make the case that pressure injuries might be a manifestation of a human biological warranty. The first is Unavoidable Pressure Injury: State of the Science and Consensus Outcomes, published in the Journal of Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing (JWOCN), and the second is How Long Must Humans Live? from the Journals of Gerontology: Biological Sciences. These articles come from widely divergent sources but when placed side by side there are insights about pressure injuries and the burning question of avoidability.   The JWOCN article is a literature review that p...

Prime Time Television, Disease, and Death
I recently experienced the phenomenon of cognitive dissonance during a commercial on the evening world news.  It was an advertisement promoting a diabetes medicine that showed people with diabetes at a barbecue, cooking and dancing.  How different this was from my day in the wound clinic where I saw patient after patient with obesity and diabetes suffering from nonhealing wounds and other complications. So I tucked this into the back of my mind until another commercial caught my attention.  As a litany of awful side effects was delivered by an offscreen announcer, the scene on TV lingered over a young couple enjoying a ...

Belated Victory for Artists at 5Pointz
Three years ago I biked across the Queensboro Bridge to admire and photograph the spraypainted graffiti murals at the fabled location in Long Island City known as 5Pointz.  Painted on the walls of a 200,000 square foot factory building, 5Pointz had a reputation as the epicenter of the graffiti scene, and featured works by artist (Source: Jeffrey M. A Sketch of My Nobel Prize Winning Professor
As an undergraduate ‘pre-med’ student at Brandeis University, my major was molecular biology.  I completed my senior thesis with a brilliant professor named Mike Rosbash who taught my genetics class.  After graduation, I stayed in his lab, taking a year off doing experiments while applying to medical school.  The work wasn’t glamorous – aside from (Source: Jeffrey M. Talking About My Art Teachers
In recent years I’ve devoted considerable time to developing my artistic skills.  To do this I’ve sought out teachers who inspire and help hone my ability to convey line, form, and emotion with pen, ink, and paint.  This post will present a few of those teachers who left a deep impression on me and (Source: Jeffrey M.
