Denis Diderot was born. A philosopher, essayist and committed empiricist, Diderot is renowned for being the chief editor of the 'L'Encyclop édie,' a seminal work of the Enlightenment, the aim of which according to Diderot was to 'change the common way of thinking' through the dissemination of knowledge. A true magnum opus 26 years in the making, L'Encyclop édie consisted of 32 volumes and over 70,000 written entries, including one extolling the virtues of psychology as an appropriate area of study in the search for useful knowledge.
