Live ectopic gestation
Imagingof live ectopic pregnancyEctopic pregnancy is a common finding with the use of ultrasound imaging. However it is still rare to find a live ectopic gestation. In this case the left fallopian tube shows an embryo with cardiac activity recorded on spectral Doppler. The above link shows images and description of the case which was later confirmed on surgery. ductus venosus attempt in a patient who won't cooperate
What happens when we attempt duplex ultrasound imaging of the ductus venosus in a 3rd trimester pregnancy who just cant hold her breath? These images tell the story:During cessation of respiration (breath holding):Observe the nice tracing/ waveformAnd when the patient continues respiratory activity: Note the interruption of the waveform. The brain's natural GPS system
This year's (2014) Nobel prize for medicine was awarded for the discovery of the function of a relatively poorly known part of the human (and animal) brain called the hippocampus. Studies by the Nobel award winning scientists show that the hippocampus is responsible for the function of locating and guiding humans through various geographical locations.Just when we docs and medics thought we knew it all, we discover that we knew ever so little, after all.But that applies to all of science. :-)Read what the BBC has to say about it:http://www.bbc.com/news/health-29504761Also a report in the NY Times:http://www.nytimes.com/201...

Case of pelvic Right kidney
This 40 year old male patient has a surprise in his abdomen. The right kidney is located in the right side of the pelvis, which is a variation from the normal. The normal position of the kidneys is the lumbar region. The right kidney should be seen in right renal fossa close to the liver. This variant is called pelvic kidney with this organ located just to the right of the urinary bladder.see: http://www.ultrasound-images.com/kidneys.htm#Ectopic/%20Pelvic%20kidney (Source: cochinblogs)

Normal lower limb venous doppler study- using convex probe
very often while performing venous Doppler study, imaging conditions are poor due to oedema of the lower limbs with the result that it is nearly impossible to visualise adequately the veins using a high frequency linear ultrasound  probe. In these conditions, the use of our convex probe of lower frequency like the one we used for the lower limb venous Doppler study, is the only practical alternative. And indeed, the results are quiet good, even impressive with a 3.5 MHz probe. Of course, when needed, one must change the PRF settings as the situation demands. This was a normal venous Doppler study of the right lower lim...

Is this a nodular subcortical heterotopia- neonatal brain ultrasound
This neonate shows a large (3.5 cms.) sized lesion in the Rt. cerebral hemisphere. What do these neonatal brain ultrasound images portray? Is it a case of neonatal nodular subcortical heterotopia or is it an ICSOL due to intracerebral bleed or some form of glioma?the answer: this is a large  intracerebral  haematoma occupying the right parietal and occipital regions of the  neonate's  brain. This was the diagnosis based on the MRI scan.See:http://www.ultrasound-images.com/Pediatric.htm#Intracranial%20hemorrhageSee this link:Radiology (AJNR) article on disorders of cortical formation (Source: cochinblogs)

Severe left internal carotid artery stenosis:
This patient has the right hemiplegia following a cerebrovascular accident involving the left parietal lobe. Color Doppler imaging of the carotid tree shows severe stenosis, 80 to 90%, involving the left internal carotid artery close to its origin from the common carotid artery. The colour Doppler image below shows the internal diameter of the left internal carotid artery is less than 3 mm near its origin. This is definitely abnormal and shows severe stenosis.spectral Doppler trace of the left common carotid artery appears relatively normal.however, the left internal carotid artery shows a definite evidence of severe stenos...

A case of painful left scrotal mass
This middle aged male patient has a left scrotal mass which is tender and painful. What do you opine? The mass showed plenty of mobile particulate matter and is located on the upper pole of the left testis.Answer: this is a case of left scrotal abscess with the purulent collection being within the left tunica vaginalis sac. Aetiology of this left scrotal collection appears to be tuberculous in origin. This can explain the lack of significant vascularity within the left scrotum and the left testes.See similar lesions at:http://www.ultrasound-images.com/scrotal-infections.htm (Source: cochinblogs)
