Sticks And Stones May Break My Bones
I’m sure that you remember the phrase ‘Sticks and stones can break my bones, but names can never harm me” from childhood, I know I certainly do. But is it true? Or is it one of those pieces of old-time nonsense that appears to be wise at first glance, but when you dig a bit deeper possess all the wisdom of a Paris Hilton led think tank on Quantum Mechanics. I got into a lively debate recently with somebody who had posted, “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can also hurt me” when I ventured to disagree. I even went as far as to post it to my ‘Terrible Quotes On Pinterest’ board. The woman in ques...

What is Life Coaching?
If you were to stop 100 people in the street and ask them what life is, you would probably get some strange looks, but I would imagine everybody would be able to give you an answer of some description. If you had too much time on your hands and you were to follow that up by asking them if they knew what a coach was, again most would be able to give you a satisfactory answer. So why do you think it is, that if you stopped 100 people and asked them to explain what Life Coaching is you would get more blank stares than if you asked the way to the gym at a Star Trek convention? You cannot get too many more obvious words than, ...

The Power of Authenticity
After a long illness my iMac finally died yesterday. It will be remembered fondly…er…actually no it won’t, it be remembered as a steaming pile of crap and death was too good for it I now look forward to several hours reinstalling everything onto the new computer (I cannot just do an install from the back up drive in case there is something in there corrupted that was causing the issues) whilst dealing with the worst case of man-flu I’ve had in 10 years. So I’m delighted that I got sent a guest post by good Friend Rob Collins that fits snugly with this site and even more snugly with my rather o...

I Don’t Give A Shit If You’re Gay
If you’re not an (American) football fan, you may have missed the ridiculous furore surrounding the announcement by Missouri star Defensive End, Michael Sam that he’s gay. I say ridiculous, because should a 19 year-old admitting he’s gay be a headline, irrespective of who it is or what he is about to do for a living? Doesn’t that belong in a time when popping a leech on to your manhood to cure impotence was considered reasonable behavior? If You’re Gay, Is This Really A Religious Matter? I had to stop listening to the NFL channel on Sirius this morning because literally every single caller wanted to offer the...

The Root Of All Human Suffering
On Tuesday I spent 2 hours on the phone with Apple tech support. I have had similar problems now stretching back almost 6 months and across 2 different computers, including a brand new one. In that time I have probably spent 20 hours with support and I’m no nearer solving the issue than when I first called in. Even though it’s still limping along I now have to take the computer back into Apple and may be without it it for a few days. Other than my iMac I only have a MacBook Air and that’s totally inefficient for doing what I need to do, so those few days maybe somewhat challenging. Yesterday my 6 month old HP printer...

7 Ways Your Brain Conspires Against You
The human brain is a weird and wonderful thing. It’s both incredibly smart and incredibly dumb, often at the same time. One of it’s major flaws is the way it sees itself and judges its inabilities and abilities because it can get things hopelessly wrong. And I do mean hopelessly wrong. Here are 7 ways your brain conspires against you. 1. You Think Being Tough On Yourself Helps If you go easier on yourself than you do on others then you are a rare exception. Most people hold themselves up to higher standards than they do those people closest to them. And for the most part they do this because they think if they don’t,...

Have You Been Brainwashed?
Let me cut to the chase and answer the question posed in the title of this post, just so you’re under no illusion. Yes you have, and so have I. Pretty much everybody (at least in first world countries) is brainwashed to a certain extent. Unfortunately the word is frequently misunderstood and usually applied to cults or people who have gone through major belief changes that make no sense to most people. The Media perpetuates this misunderstanding by only using the word in such circumstances. No mainstream newspaper screams that the Democratic or Republican Party are trying to brainwash you. But they are. What Does It Mean...

Life’s Not Fair – And Then You Die
Thousands of people world wide will have lost loved ones over the holidays. I spent half an hour chatting with a Filipino barman on our cruise ship just recently who lost a brother-in-law during Typhoon Haiyan. A brother-in-law who had 2 kids, a mother living with him and was the sole bread winner for the family. At this moment thousands of innocent people worldwide are in a prison cells, young kids who only ever brought joy are dying from incurable diseases and total bastards are living life high on the hog at the expense of people they have exploited. I don’t know about you, but none of that seems very fair to me. Life...

8 Secrets To The Psychology of Winning
Firstly, let me wish you a very happy New Year and I hope that if you don’t necessarily get everything you want, you at least enjoy the ride! Prior to last week I hadn’t had a proper vacation in almost 4 years. Not that that was a big deal, one of the pleasant byproducts of doing a job you love, is that vacations don’t feel needed. However, it’s still nice to get away and when the away is on a cruise ship in the Caribbean, so much the better. We both had a great time and I’m glad I didn’t let my initial apathy to being away over Christmas deter us. Something weird happened though, because for a couple of da...

The Secret Of Life
I found an old work colleague on Words with Friends the other day. It was a guy I used to work with many moons ago and even though we were never in the same team I often enjoyed a good banter with him and was happy to see him alive and kicking. So I thought I’d say hello and challenge him to a game. As you can imagine we got talking about old times with me asking him about some of the people we used to work with and it was great to catch up. At one stage he said, “By the look of the amount of games you’re playing you seem to have an easy life over in Florida”. I responded that as I new worked for myself I could do ...

The Black Dog of Depression
I wasn’t going to publish another post until next week as I have been a bit slammed and anyway a break from me aint no bad thing! Then I had the video in the post sent to me by my sister-in-law who lives in Australia. What the makers of this video have achieved is an easy to understand, non-preachy and clear message that it’s ok to have depression. And by that I mean there should be no need to hide it, be embarrassed about it give in to it. It’s crazy that in this day and age there is still a stigma attached to a disease that is no different any other disease you care to mention. How Do You Quantify Something You Can...

Are You In Denial?
Millions of people read self development and Life Coaching blogs every single day of the year and millions more are subscribed to newsletters offering similar advice. Yet more people will be reading books on productivity, time management, happiness, goal setting, stress management, meditation and any other area of self development topic you care to mention. The self development industry is a huge beast constantly supplying new (and not so new) information to a hungry public looking for the difference that will make the difference in their life. Unfortunately though, most people never act on the information or implement the...

Whoopie Do, Another Life Changing Sale
I have no idea how many e-mails I have received in the last week advertising either Black Friday or Cyber Monday once in a lifetime deals, but it’s well in excess of 100 and every single one ended in my trash folder. If only I’d had an e-mail from Spam Sieve my (largely) inadequate spam filter telling me they were having a sale on an e-mail program that not just blocked, but also deleted all Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals and sent a red hot poker up the ass of the person who’d sent it,  I’d have jumped at it. But alas they didn’t, they were too busy waving e-mails from China into my inbox. It’s in...
