Is Change Hard?
I read a blog post recently on the topic of change written by another Life Coach. It went on to say that if we aren’t prepared for the ‘fact’ that change is hard then we are likely to fall flat on our faces when trying to make positive improvements. I was tempted to leave a comment saying, “picking your nose is hard and if you aren’t prepared for that fact you will almost certainly poke your own eye out or eat your own finger”. I didn’t though, largely because I am trying to ease off in my role as CEO of the Universe and accept there are incompetent and ill informed Life Coaches and that won’t ...

7 Reasons Self Development Blogs May Be Bad For Your Well-being
I have no idea how many self development blogs exist, but I know it’s a lot. The growth is being fueled largely by the surge of new Life Coaches entering the profession and people who think they may want to become a coach at some stage and are using a blog as a first toe in the water. On the one had you’d think this must be a good thing. After all, never in the history of human existence have so many people had such easy access to self development material, most of which is free. What’s not to love about that? Well, quite a lot really, because a growing number of self development bloggers are failing to think about t...

The 3 Killers Of Hopes And Dreams
When you ask people about their big hopes and dreams they will often set off by telling you about an amazing idea they have, project they want to launch or invention that just can’t miss. They will often talk with fervor and gusto, with a gleam in their eye and an unmistakable confidence in their voice. Then nothing happens for a few weeks, a few months or maybe even a few years. When you next see them, maybe their enthusiasm has waned somewhat as you ask them what went wrong? After all, it was a sure fire winner, wasn’t it? You will get either a shrug of their shoulders or a sheepish look on their face followed up...

Life Coaches: How To Help Your Clients Get Unstuck
When I first launched Aligning With Your Core Values in 2011 I had no idea of the impact it would make. I wrote it in large part because I was frustrated at the lack of practical information out there about core values and their importance within Life Coaching. I’d seen first hand in working with hundreds of clients the massive positive impact this could have on the coaching process. The original book was really aimed at self development enthusiasts rather than other Life Coaches. However, it soon became apparent that a lot of Life Coaches were buying it to help them coach more effectively and I was getting positive ...

Why Everybody Likes To Say “I Told You So!”
It’s weird isn’t it, that feeling you get when something you said is dismissed, denied or even ridiculed and later turns out to be right? You know you really shouldn’t gloat, but the urge can be almost overwhelming, and for a very good reason. Firstly, your brain floods with dopamine, the chemical that gives you that rush of pleasure you so rightly deserve and your nuclear accumbens (the pleasure center of your brain) lights up like Vegas at Christmas. You’re brain loves being right more than it loves your favorite TV program, it craves the dopamine and the sense that it did a great job.* A Rise In Status Secondly,...

The Internet’s A Weird Place
Last week when I had my idea to offer Life Coaching to the person who offered to donate the most money to the victims of Oklahoma I was pumped. As I usually do, I posted the link to my Facebook page hoping to generate some traction. All I actually generated was crickets chirping, some tumbleweed and a couple of kindly thumbs up. The views of the post was way lower than normal and I did something I don’t think I have ever done before. I deleted the Facebook link and re-posted it. The response, or lack thereof was the same. There were a few shares from the Facebook link from my site, but none from Facebook itself. Then I p...

Let’s Help Oklahoma
I have been feeling pretty sorry for myself this week. For the first time in about 4 years I caught a really bad cold. I won’t claim it was the flu like so many people do when they get a heavy cold. I’ve had the proper flu twice in my life and it’s not the same thing at all. Nevertheless, I had to cancel a load of client sessions and have had real problems concentrating and even staying awake. I tend not to watch, listen or read the news because it usually just brings me down, but it has been difficult not to get sucked into the terrible situation in Oklahoma. Like any tragedy there have been stories of amazing h...

The Repercussions Of Ignoring Your Gut Instinct
I talk to clients a lot about gut instincts, intuition or whatever else you want to call that feeling you get of deep knowing without being able to explain it. And the reason why I talk about them so often is because too many people ignore them because they frequently don’t seem logical or rational. In fact quite the opposite, they often seem nebulous, dumb or just plain bizarre. The net result is when we summarily dismiss the feeling because we don’t understand it, we frequently regret doing so at a later date. The Repercussions Of Ignoring Your Gut Instinct I had a good friend who got married even though his gut ...

Two Super Powerful Words
Today I welcome back my good friend Rob Collins who has written the kind of post that had me thinking, “Why the hell didn’t I write this?” Then realizing I was out of alignment with his message I changed my viewpoint and thought, “What if I kill Rob and took the credit for myself, could I get away with it?” Anyway, I haven’t killed him, largely because he’s 4,500 miles away, so you can read this excellent post relaxed in the knowledge that no homicide took place in its making. Two Super Powerful Words “Something doesn’t feel right” I realized as I sat at my comput...

Screw It, Don’t Do It
You may be familiar with the Richard Branson book, ‘Screw it, let’s do it” Apparently if Branson cannot make his mind up on a new business venture that’s what he usually ends up saying. It’s typical Branson and you really can imagine him saying that and following it up with, “I’ll let you guys sort out the details I’m off to go kite boarding with a naked super model”. By and large I like it as a maxim for life because too many people act in the opposite manner. When they have to make important decisions they forget about the immense power of their gut instinct that is almost certainly saying ‘yes’ or ...

Want Some Advice? No You Don’t
Life has an amazing synchronicity about it some times. I was only thinking on Friday that I was struggling to make time to write a blog post this weekend when into my inbox dropped such an item. That’s actually not that unusual as I get sent a fair few each work, but this one really had me thinking differently and that is exactly the kind of post I want to share with you guys. So here it is! Want Some Advice?  No You Don’t Giving advice is a bad habit and it usually doesn’t help the person we give it to. Nevertheless, I gave some advise to a presidential appointee in the Bush administration who had hired me as a coa...
