(Needle) Jockeying for the Evidence

It is not unusual for physicians, including physiatrists, to question the role and utility of interventional procedures in the treatment of chronic pain. Much of this skepticism is driven by overutilization of these procedures, which has been well documented by analyses of Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services claims data.1-3 Those of us who perform these procedures are well aware of the improvement in pain and function that they have the potential to provide, but most of us are also aware that the data informing our use of these procedures are often inadequate.
