The Nurse+Engineer as the Prototype V-Shaped Professional

A formalized course of study executed through an institution of higher education, often known as a “discipline”, is widely recognized as an essential requirement for a “trade” to mature into a “profession” (Algase et al, 2021; Oerther, 2021; Oerther et al, 2020). The knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) that make up the content of this course of study often is known as a “ body of knowledge” (BoK), and specialized faculty often contribute to and steward this knowledge. Signature pedagogies, or the methods and practices of teaching a particular discipline, reinforce both the KSAs of the profession as well as how to think, how to perform, and how to act with integrity as a professional (Shulman, 2005).
