A 73-year-old woman with delayed intra-abdominal and systemic sepsis following complicated aortobifemoral bypass

A 73-year-old, independently living woman transferred urgently after presentation to an outside institution with passage of blood and surgical staples per rectum. A computed tomography scan of the abdomen confirmed an abdominal abscess cavity. She received broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics, and percutaneous drainage of the abscess prior to transfer. Her history was significant for aortobifemoral bypass graft (ABFG) for lifestyle-limiting claudication 4 years previously, complicated by colon ischemia treated with left hemicolectomy, colostomy, and a Hartmann pouch.
