Early Initiation of Parenteral Nutrition in Elderly Emergency General Surgery Patients

Due to increased rates of preexisting nutritional deficiencies, decreased baseline functional status, and diminished ability to adapt to metabolic stress, geriatric emergency general surgery (EGS) patients are at high risk for poor outcomes. We sought to evaluate the impact of early vs late initiation of parenteral nutrition (PN) in elderly EGS patients who demonstrated relative short-term contraindications to enteral nutrition.
