Failure in Cervical Total Disc Arthroplasty: Single Institution Experience, Systematic Review of the Literature, and Proposal of the RUSH TDA Failure Classification System

Although anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) has long been the standard surgical treatment for cervical radiculopathy and myelopathy refractory to conservative management, fusion of cervical motion segments into non-mobile spinal units can place abnormal biomechanical strain on adjacent levels, and thus may precipitate degenerative changes.[1-4] In an effort to preserve natural kinematics at diseased cervical motion segments, attention has shifted towards cervical total disc arthroplasty (TDA).
