The Heritability of Primary Angle Closure Anatomic Traits and Predictors of Angle Closure in South Indian Siblings

The number of people worldwide with primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) in 2020 is estimated to be 23.4 million with 76.9% of PACG cases occurring in Asia.1 South India, in particular, has a high prevalence of PACG, ranging from 0.5% to 2.75%.2-6 Angle closure is known to be highly heritable with family history being an important risk factor for angle closure disease.7-9 Heritability can be defined as the proportion of variance attributable to genetic effects. The overall heritability of PACG is estimated at 60%, and siblings of patients with primary angle closure (PAC)/PACG probands have been shown to have nearly 14-fold greater odds of angle closure compared with siblings of patients with open angles (OA) and 3 to 7-fold greater odds of developing PACG compared to the general population.
