Abolishing Racism and Other Forms of Oppression in Scholarly Communication

Events of the past year have heightened many people's awareness of the profound impact of racism and other forms of oppression on health. Racism – defined as a “system of structuring opportunity and assigning value based on the social interpretation of how one looks (which is what we call ‘race’) that unfairly disadvantages some individuals and communities, unfairly advantages other individuals and communities, and saps the strength of the whole society through the waste of human resources”([1,2]) – is now recognized as a critical social determinant of health [1,3,4].
