Atrial fibrillation is associated with greater risk of dementia in older veterans

Both atrial fibrillation (AF) and dementia predominantly affect the elderly and exert a heavy burden on health care systems. Several lines of data suggest that AF is associated with cognitive impairment and dementia 1,2; however the evidence, especially among older adults, is conflicting1,3 –6. Small sample size and cross-sectional designs are methodological limitations that may explain the inconsistent findings. Furthermore, the mechanisms underlying the association between AF and dementia still need further investigation.
