Premature ovarian insufficiency: A toolkit for the primary care physician

Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) or hypergonadotropic hypogonadism refers to loss of ovarian activity, which leads to hypoestrogenism and amenorrhoea, before the age of 40 years. In women with spontaneous POI there may be intermittent resumption of ovarian activity in approximately 25% of women. The diagnosis of POI in a young woman has potentially life-changing physical and emotional consequences for the sufferer and her family. It is therefore important that the diagnosis is correct and that it is made in a timely manner.
