"High functioning depression"?

Any thoughts on this concept? It's not an empirically based disorder but occasionally makes the rounds in popular media articles, where it basically means "depression but with very little to no functional impairment," The articles either try to describe it as mild MDD or as PDD (what used to be called dysthymic disorder).
