Avoidance of Nephrectomy and Percutaneous Extraction of Retroperitoneal Calculi Secondary to Xanthogranulomatous Pyelonephritis
Interventional radiologists are infrequently involved in managing xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) except in cases where renal/extrarenal abscess drainage is required. Upasani et al (1) reported renal artery embolization following failed surgery, averting nephrectomy, but sacrificing the kidney. In limited reports of stone extraction from extra-anatomic cavities (2–4), many devices have been used, including baskets most frequently and rarely endoscopes and lithotripsy, v ia accesses varying from 12 to 34 F.
