Outcomes of concomitant mesh placement and intestinal procedures during open ventral hernia repair

ConclusionConcomitant bowel procedure and mesh placement at the time of open ventral hernia repair was associated with worse outcomes. The SSI profile of the contaminated fields was more similar to dirty wounds. When deciding whether to place mesh during ventral hernia repairs with concomitant bowel procedures, strong consideration should be given to the increased risk of short-term complications versus the potential long-term benefits.
