Predicting emergency department volumes: A multicenter prospective study

Emergency department overcrowding, defined as patient volume in excess of capacity, is associated with medical errors, delays in care, and an increased mortality rate for patients waiting to be seen [1,2]. Accurately anticipating emergency department volumes could facilitate more efficient allocation of resources that limit overcrowding, and potentially improve patient outcomes. Such forecasting tools are not readily available, and previously published tools were based on retrospective data [3-5].
