16.4 mental health and substance use predictors of recidivism among first-time justice involved youth

Most recidivism research focuses on serious violent offending youth and finds that dual diagnosis (mental health and substance use disorder) is strongly predictive of youth recidivism. We sought to understand how mental health symptoms and substance misuse are associated with recidivism among first-time justice-involved youth (diverted from detention, ie, less severe offenses) to identify ways to prevent future justice system involvement.
