Increasing Participation in a Substance Misuse Programs: Lessons Learned for Implementing Telehealth Solutions During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, the relevance of Cimarolli and colleagues ’ article1, which focuses on participation in a substance misuse intervention for older adults, is well timed. Efforts to develop interventions for older adults with a substance use disorder, along with rigorous evaluations of their efficacy, are scarce in the gerontological literature. For exampl e, in previous research with colleagues, we examined the leading gerontological and substance abuse journals over a seven-year period which revealed that less than one percent of articles published in these journals focused on older adults with substance use disorders, and only a handful of these ar ticles focused on intervention studies2.
