Emergency Management of Catheter Associated Venous Thromboembolism in Cancer Patients

Implantable vascular devices, such as peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) increase the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Emergency department management of catheter associated VTE remains unclear and questions remain about whether the catheter needs to be immediately removed, can continue to be used, and what therapy is optimal, often in the setting of thrombocytopenia.
