Social media and young people's health

Social media has become a pervasive part of modern society especially for adolescents and young adults. However, paediatric and psychiatric history taking has not always kept up with this rapid change. Social media can play a huge role in our patient's lives (both positive and negative) and so our history taking should reflect this. Peer beliefs and influence play a significant role in young people's view of the world so asking the right questions about their virtual interactions can provide vital information on the impact of online activity on their mental and directly and indirectly on their physical health.
