Narrative communication to improve patient satisfaction with forgoing low value care
Per capita healthcare costs in the United States are higher than in any other country in the world [1]. Some initiatives, most notably Choosing Wisely, have attempted to address this problem by reducing the use of low value care [2]. These efforts may be complicated by patient concerns that they are being denied necessary interventions. Improved communication may help mitigate this concern. Traditionally, providers communicate with patients using probabilistic messages that emphasize risks and benefits.
