Response to “Molecular ion: a more contemporary definition”

AbstractDear Editor,In“Molecular ion: a more contemporary definition”1, Eberlin and Canevari propose revisions to the current IUPAC recommended terms relating to mass spectrometry2. The proposed revision with respect to the creation of a term for “Permanently charged ions” is welcomed, as adequate description of this ion type is not well‐served by the current terms. However, the proposed change to the definition of “Molecular ion” to include ions other than those formed by addition or removal of an electron risks ambiguity and conf usion where clarity presently exists.
