Hyperspectral Imaging of the Carotid Artery Subject to Endarterectomy

With regard to vessel wall remodelling, the adventitia has received considerable attention in recent years. The outermost layer of the vessel wall not only contains a heterogenous population of cells, but also an adrenergic nervous system, a lymphatic network, and a specialised microvasculature. By supplying blood and oxygen to the vessel wall, these microvascular vasa vasorum represent the highway for oxygen and nutrient supply to the media and intima.1 Experimental and clinical studies have demonstrated that intimal, medial, and adventitial remodelling occurs in response to revascularisation procedures.
