Holistic Review in Residency Admissions

A number of years ago the National Board of Dental Examiners (NBDE) decided to convert Part I of the national dental boards into a pass-fail examination. Their rationale at the time was twofold. First, they knew that psychometrically the scoring method in use was flawed. The number of items in the various sections was too small to accurately show differences between individuals taking the examination. In other words, the test was not powerful enough for anyone to properly conclude that someone receiving a score of, for example, 90 was more capable than someone who had scored 89.
