Less is more: The impact of deprescribing psychotropic drugs on behavioral and psychological symptoms and daily functioning in nursing home patients. Results from the cluster-randomized controlled COSMOS trial

The introduction of psychotropic drugs in the 1950s revolutionized the understanding and treatment of severe psychiatric disorders, undoubtedly alleviating the symptom burden and improving daily functioning for persons with severe affective and psychotic disorders1. Today, these drugs are often used off-label, thus the use of psychotropic drugs for managing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) warrants special attention2-5. BPSD such as delusions, hallucinations, agitation, anxiety, and aberrant motor behavior are associated with poorer physical and cognitive functioning as symptoms persist and reoccur in the course of dementia2, 6-8.
