Developing community engagement: The psychiatric nurse generalist as full partner in suicide prevention

The Institute of Medicine's (IOM) report on the Future of Nursing: Leading Change recommended that nurses become full partners with physicians and other health professionals in redesigning health care (IOM, 2011). A subtheme of this recommendation was the need for nurses to assume leadership roles in such collaborations. This included participating to create and implement policy with decision making bodies such as boards of directors, coalitions, and advisory councils. Much of the details in this recommendation focused on health care delivery improvement.
