Compassionate embryo transfer: part of a bigger question

Hairston et  al. present results from a cross-sectional survey of members of the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (SREI) exploring attitudes and practice related to “compassionate transfer” of frozen embryos (1). The practice of compassionate transfer is “the intentional placement o f embryo(s) into the female reproductive tract…when implantation is unlikely to occur”, that is, a transfer done with the explicit goal of not establishing a pregnancy. The authors sent a survey to 704 SREI members, of whom 202 (27.1%) responded, and 168 (83.2%) confirmed that they had knowledge of compassionate transfer.
