Development of Academic Pediatric Urgent Care Fellowships
Consumer demand for low-cost convenient care and consumer expectations that health services be easily accessible and efficient have led to the rapid expansion of urgent care over the last decade. Redirecting acute care visits to non-ED locations has the potential to decrease ED overcrowding, increase patient satisfaction, and generate cost savings.1As of 2017, there were 7639 urgent care centers in the United States, with 21% dedicated to the treatment of pediatric patients.2 In addition to the expansion of freestanding urgent care centers in the United States, hospital-based acute care centers distinct from emergency departments (EDs) have also multiplied.
