The verbal numeric pain scale: Emergency Department patients' understanding and perspectives

Acute and chronic pain related conditions are common chief complaints among ED patients [1]. Self-reported pain can be influenced by multiple factors, including, age, race, gender, Medicaid insurance, lower educational status, higher number of previous visits to the ED and psychological stress [2-8].
