Resources needed to teach midwife sonographers to measure cervical length with transvaginal ultrasound in the second trimester

ABSTRACTGeneral screening of singleton pregnancies for preterm delivery by adding cervical length measurement with transvaginal ultrasound to second trimester routine fetal ultrasound examination has been advocated1. Reference ranges of cervical length are available from 11 to 40 weeks of gestation.2 In the Nordic countries, second trimester routine ultrasound examinations are performed by specially trained midwife sonographers, and if screening for preterm delivery were to be introduced, cervical length measurements would be done by them. Therefore, we wanted to estimate the resources needed to train midwife sonographers to measure cervical length with transvaginal ultrasound and the time needed for cervical length measurement.
